The talk lately about the new Scorsese documentary on George Harrison, plus news about Dylan, reminded me of something. When I first saw Scorsese's documentary about Dylan's career up until the motorcycle crash, I had little exposure to the subjects covered here.
Nevertheless, even then something Dylan says on film struck me as a really powerful thing, and I think now the meaning is becoming clearer.
What happens is that Dylan and his people are backstage somewhere in Europe, and they have clearly each just done a line of speed off of a visible plate, and Dylan uses his fingers to get the last bits. Dylan says he is too tired to perform and can't cover it up.
Then he says the lines, as he wipes his mouth - "I'm gonna get me a new Bob Dylan next week. I'm gonna get me a new Bob Dylan, use him, and see how long HE lasts."
This is right at the end of the movie. This just strikes me as a mega-clue. Here we have a man that is aware that he himself is for the time being the new Bob Dylan, and is cracking under the load and is dropping obvious, bitter, hateful clues into someone's camera lens. And then this man had a little crash...
