"3 dead, 11 hurt after man crashes at Guam resort
HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — Three people were killed and 11 injured after a man crashed a car into a convenience store at a Guam resort, then got out and began stabbing those around him, police said.
The wreck and alleged knife attack Monday night at a shopping area at the Outrigger Guam Resort sent frightened hotel guests fleeing for safety, the Pacific Daily News in Hagatna reported Tuesday (http://goo.gl/8qxzk). Fire officials say a total of 14 people were taken to Guam Memorial Hospital.
Guam Police Chief Fred Bordallo said at a news conference early Tuesday that authorities had a suspect, described as a "young adult male," in custody. No additional details about the investigation were released.
A woman at a nearby café with friends told the newspaper that she saw the car plow through the driveway and into an ABC Store fronting the resort. Ashley Quichocho, 18, of Dededo says the driver got out, ran up to bystanders and began stabbing them.
"He started stabbing someone, and I started freaking out," Quichocho said. "He was just running back and forth stabbing people."
Quichocho said she ran to the second floor of the hotel with other guests to escape.
Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo said the U.S. territory is working with the Japanese Consulate to provide support and assistance to the families of victims.
The resort is at Guam's Tumon Bay, which includes a shopping center with retailers and restaurants. ABC Stores is a chain of convenience stores based in Honolulu."

"Man goes on shooting rampage in Calif.; 3 killed
TUSTIN, Calif. (AP) The early morning commute was just getting under way on suburban Orange County's network of freeways when Melvin Lee Edwards pulled up to a stop sign near a busy off-ramp.
It was just after 5 a.m. and Edwards, 69, was on his way to work when, police say, a fleeing murder suspect forced him out of his BMW at gunpoint, marched him across the street and shot him three times from behind as horrified commuters watched.
The shooting was the second of three murders in a trail of carnage early Tuesday that spanned 25 miles but lasted just an hour. The shooter, 20-year-old Ali Syed, killed a woman in the home he shared with his parents, killed two drivers during carjackings, injured two others and shot up cars on a busy freeway interchange before committing suicide as police closed in, authorities said.
Syed, an unemployed part-time community college student, had no known motive and acted alone, said Tustin police Chief Scott Jordan. The first victim, a woman in her twenties, has not been identified and was not related to Syed, he said.
The violence began at 4:45 a.m., when deputies responded to a call from Ladera Ranch, a sleepy inland town about 55 miles southeast of Los Angeles. They found the woman shot multiple times.
Syed's parents were in the house at the time, fled the residence when shots were fired, and reported it, Jordan said.
From Ladera Ranch, the gunman headed north and pulled off Interstate 5 in Tustin, about 20 miles away, with a flat tire, police said.
A man who was waiting in a shopping center parking lot to carpool with his son saw Syed had a gun and tried to escape in his Cadillac, Jordan said. Syed ran after the car as it drove away and fired his shotgun through the back window, striking the driver in head but not killing him.
The driver "noticed that he was loading his shotgun, so he simply gets back in his car and tries to escape," Jordan said. "He's driving through the parking lot trying to get away and the suspect is actually chasing him on foot, taking shots at him."
Syed then crossed the street to a Mobil gas station, where he approached the driver of a pick-up who was filling his tank and asked for his keys, Jordan said.
"He says something to the effect of, 'I've killed somebody. Today's my last day. I don't want to hurt you. Give me your keys,'" the police chief said. "He hands over the keys and he gets in the truck and leaves."
Syed got back on the freeway, where he pulled to the side of the road at the busy I-5 and State Route 55 interchange and began firing at commuters, Jordan said.
One driver was struck in the mouth and hand. He didn't have a cellphone, but was able to drive home and call police. Two other cars were hit but their drivers weren't injured, Jordan said.
"All of this is happening so quickly," he said, estimating that Syed shot at drivers from the side of the freeway transition for about a minute.
The shooter then exited the freeway in nearby Santa Ana but ran the curb and got his car stuck, authorities said.
He approached Edwards, of Laguna Hills, who was on his way to his Santa Ana business. Syed shot Edwards three times, including in the back of the head and the back, Jordan said.
Onlookers "tried to get away. They saw what was going on, they tried to get away and they called police," he said.
Syed took Edwards' BMW and next popped up at the Micro Center, a Tustin business, where he shot and killed construction worker Jeremy Lewis, 26, of Fullerton. Lewis' co-worker rushed to intervene and was shot in the arm, Jordan said.
Syed took the second construction worker's utility truck and fled to Orange, this time with California Highway Patrol officers in pursuit. He jumped from the moving utility truck at an intersection in Orange, about five miles away, and shot himself in the head, Jordan said.
"There really wasn't a confrontation at the very end," he said. "It happened so quickly."
A shotgun was recovered at the scene and is believed to be the only weapon used.
A message left at Syed's parents' home wasn't immediately returned on Tuesday."

"Two die in officer-involved shootings in California
Two people have been killed in two separate officer-involved shootings in the San Francisco Bay Area in the US state of California.
The two were killed in Union City and nearby Hayward on Saturday night and Sunday, the Associated Press reported.
One of those killed was a motorist shot by police at a traffic stop in Union City and died later at a hospital on Saturday night.
In the other shooting, which occurred near Hayward early on Sunday, a driver, who was trying to run over a police officer, was shot dead in his car.
On Saturday, two other people died in two different officer-related shootings in the Bay Area, putting the death toll at four in a little more than 24 hours.
There have been several deadly shootings across the United States over the past few months, putting the issue of lax gun control laws back in the spotlight.
Every year, more than 30,000 people are shot and killed in the US.
The US averages 87 gun deaths each day as a function of gun violence, with an average of 183 injured, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab and the Centers for Disease Control.
The year 2012 has been a record-setting year for gun sales in the US.
About 4.5 million firearms are sold annually in the United States at a cost of 2 to 3 billion dollars.
Over 100,000 US citizens have signed an online petition to the White House, dubbed “We the People,” asking US President Barack Obama’s administration for a renewed national debate on gun control. "

"2 dead in Los Angeles police standoff in Watts
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A gunman killed a man, opened fire on police and holed himself up in a Watts home with three children inside before shooting himself, police said Friday.
A woman believed to be his wife was wounded and taken to a hospital in grave condition, Deputy Chief Robert Green told KABC-TV.
The standoff began at about 3 a.m. Friday as a domestic dispute.
The gunman fatally wounded a man in a truck outside the house who later died and also shot at arriving police but didn't hit them, Green said. He retreated to a home and continued firing at officers, Green said.
At one point during the two-hour standoff, an 8-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl came out of the house, Cmdr. Andy Smith told City News Service.
They told officers that "mom and dad" were dead in the home, Green said.
SWAT officers entered the home at about 5 a.m. and found the man dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. A woman believed to be his wife was thought at first to have died, but Green later said she was taken to a hospital in grave condition. A 1-year-old boy was also in the home.
Police took away all three children.
"They'll be in our custody until we identify relatives," Green said.
No officers were hurt.
The names of the victims were not immediately released."

"Four dead at barber shop, car wash in upstate New York
Four people have been shot dead at a car wash and a barber shop in upstate New York, state police told NBC affiliate WKTV, and at least two others were shot and injured.
The shootings occurred at John's Barber Shop in Mohawk and Gaffey's Car Wash in Herkimer, neighboring towns that lie roughly halfway between Syracuse and Albany.
Police believe Kurt R. Myers is responsible for the shootings. Myers is 64 and from Mohawk, according to local reports. He is still at large.
There was also a fire shortly before the shootings in Mohawk, WKTV reported. Police were reportedly seen removing about a half dozen guns from the building where the fire had been, according to The Utica Observer-Dispatch.
"It is strongly believed at this time to be related to the shootings," James Baron, Mohawk's 29-year-old mayor, said of the fire.
Baron said he doesn't know Myers but knew several of the people who were shot, including "at least" two of the barbershop victims. The mayor described his village as close-knit and friendly, "the kind of place where you'd say, Oh, it would never happen here."'
Michele Mlinar, a bartender in Herkimer, told The Utica Observer-Dispatch that Myers was a regular at The Cangees Bar and Grill where she works.
"When I saw his picture, I just got sick to my stomach,â€she told the paper, adding that Myers was nice to staff but always “very jittery and nervous.â€
“It could have been here. It could have been us,†she said.
Local schools are on lockdown.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo and state police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico were on their way to the area and were expected to brief the media later in the day.
Herkimer and Mohawk are villages that face each other on opposite sides of the Mohawk River, in the state's Mohawk Valley region."

"3 dead, including suspect, in Marine base shooting
QUANTICO, Va. (AP) — A Marine killed a male and female colleague in a shooting at a base in northern Virginia before killing himself, officials said.
It began with a shooting around 11 p.m. Thursday that left one dead at Marine Base Quantico, base spokesman Lt. Agustin Solivan said. That shooting led to a standoff between authorities and the suspect, who was barricaded in barracks at the base.
Authorities entered the barracks early Friday and found the suspect dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound along with a second victim. Solivan could not say what prompted authorities to enter the barracks, which are at the base's officer candidate school.
No names were immediately released but Solivan said the suspect and both victims were Marines. Authorities believe the suspect was a staff member at the officer candidate school, Solivan said.
Solivan said the shooting was isolated to the school and authorities were confident there were no other casualties. The base was put on lockdown after the shooting but the lockdown was lifted early Friday. During the lockdown, residents were warned over a loudspeaker to stay inside.
The base, which is about 37 miles south of Washington, is also home to the FBI's training academy.
In 2010, the base was one of several targets of an ex-Marine reservist who, during five nighttime shootings, fired on military targets including the Pentagon. Yonathan Melaku, on two separate occasions, fired at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico. No one was injured and Melaku was ultimately sentenced to 25 years in prison."

"Teen among victims in Pa. Target store stabbings
PITTSBURGH (AP) — A 16-year-old girl who was visiting Pittsburgh from Tennessee with her family was one of three people stabbed inside a downtown Target store, and she is in critical condition, authorities said Tuesday.
A knife-wielding man ran into the store at about 5:30 p.m. Monday after a fight nearby and briefly took her hostage, authorities said.
The unidentified girl suffered a punctured lung and was taken into surgery, police said Tuesday, and a homeless man, Leon Raymond Walls, 41, was charged in the attack, court records show. There's no evidence Walls knew the girl.
Police say Walls at first headed toward the restrooms in the back of the store in the East Liberty neighborhood and that at least two men entered the store searching for him. Witnesses said one of the men had a baseball bat. Walls allegedly tried to use the girl as a shield while she stood in the checkout lanes with family members, police spokeswoman Diane Richard said.
Walls then allegedly slashed the two men who had chased him and seriously injured the girl.
Police said one of the men will need surgery to repair an injury to his face, while the other man was treated for a hand injury and released.
A police officer was also taken to hospitals to be treated for pepper spray exposure. A bystander who helped to subdue Walls complained of chest pains and was taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition.
Walls was unable to post $250,000 bond, court records show, and no home address or attorney was listed for him."

So if they don't use a gun, they'll use some other form of weapon....but with something other than an automatic assault weapon, someone can wrestle with the "armed" suspect and fight him, with a gun, they couldn't be as successful.
Will they try to remove all blunt objects from people in the event of future stabbings, clubbings, or other such attacks?
It's not just a weapon that makes someone dangerous, it's the state of their minds....are they capable of defending themselves, or are they going to attack some public place??

Throw down the guns, or else we'll take them from you...thus says the "system". I'm just amazed that, before those kids were cold in their graves (that's IF the kids really existed at all!), politicians were already spouting off with their pre-planned gun control speeches. Talk about nerve! The concept of shame has truly died.

"4 hurt in crash, attack at California Wal-Mart Authorities say 4 hurt after driver crashes into Calif. Wal-Mart, assaults people in store
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Four people were hurt Sunday when a driver crashed his car into a Wal-Mart and then assaulted customers inside, officials said.
The man hit two cars in the parking lot at about 11:15 a.m. with his red Oldsmobile Cutlass sedan then crashed through the storefront near the pharmacy and collided with a beer display before stopping, police and witnesses said.
The unidentified driver then got out of his car and used a blunt object to attack people, San Jose police Officer Albert Morales said. The driver was arrested when officers arrived.
Investigators have not determined how fast the driver — described as a man in his 30s — was going at the time of the crash but the car went about 20 feet into the Wal-Mart Supercenter that had about 70 people inside in San Jose, Morales said.
One person suffered what Morales described as serious injuries. He did not know the extent of the injuries to the three other people but said they were not life-threatening. The injured included a store employee.
Customer Sharon Kaye told the San Jose Mercury News the driver sideswiped her car as he made several runs around the parking lot before driving between poles at the entrance and crashing into the store.
"At first, I thought I may have done something to anger him while driving," she said. "But then I realized he was out to get into the store."
After the crash, the entrance to the Wal-Mart was roped off with yellow police tape, and workers put up large boards covering the automatic doors where the car had entered.
A Wal-Mart spokeswoman told the Mercury News that the store remained shut down for several hours, and an employee was among those hurt.
"We're obviously very concerned about the associate who was injured," spokeswoman Kory Lundberg said.
Shopper and witness Tianna Doan told the newspaper the employee was a cashier who was hit with the object and had a head injury.
Calls to the store by The Associated Press went unanswered Sunday."

"Lone Star College stabbing: At least 14 wounded, suspect in custody
At least 14 people were wounded in an apparent mass stabbing at Lone Star College's CyFair campus in Cypress, Texas, on Tuesday morning.
The suspect, a white male armed with what one witness described as an X-Acto knife, was detained, police said. The suspect, believed to be 21, was enrolled at the school.
Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said police received a 911 call at 11:12 a.m. local time reporting a white male "on the loose stabbing people."
The school was placed on lockdown.
"Seek shelter now," Lone Star College's Twitter feed warned Tuesday afternoon. "If away, stay away."
The incident occurred near and around the school's Health Science Center and remains an active crime scene, Garcia said.
"Buildings are still being searched," he added.
Four victims were transported by helicopter with serious injuries "consistent with laceration," a spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office said. Two others were taken by ambulance to a local trauma center.
Two of those victims are in critical condition, he said. Four are in fair condition. Others victims treated for minor injuries and two refused treatment, Garcia said.
One witness told CNN that the suspect was hearing impaired.
An announcement was made over loud speakers warning students to seek shelter. "This is an emergency," the announcement said, according to KHOU-TV. "Everybody stay inside of your rooms. Do not leave your rooms."
An alert issued on the school's website indicated that "another suspect may possibly be at large." But Garcia said surveillance video reviewed by police indicated there was one "and only one" suspect.
An Instagram user who claimed he helped apprehend the suspect posted a photo of a man face down on the ground with a backpack:
F--- this mothaf---er stabbed 5 people. 2 girls in the cheek. Everyone ran the other way I said f--- that. Me and this kid got em #lonestarstabbing #f---thiskid #copsaretooslow
Police would not confirm the exact weapon used by the suspect, but said no firearms were found at the scene.
The campus was evacuated, vice chancellor Randy Key told reporters, and the college will remain closed for the remainder of the day.
In January, three people were wounded in a shooting at Lone Star College's North Harris campus near Houston. More than 90,000 students attend classes across the Lone Star College system's six campuses."
