Garofalo was born in Newton, New Jersey, the daughter of Joan, a secretary in the petrochemical industry who died of cancer when Janeane was 24, and Carmine Garofalo, a former executive at Exxon. Garofalo is of Italian and Irish descent. She grew up in various places, including Ontario, California; Madison, New Jersey; and Katy, Texas where she graduated from James E. Taylor High School. While studying history at Providence College, Garofalo entered a comedy talent search sponsored by the Showtime cable network, winning the title of "Funniest Person in Rhode Island." Her original gimmick was to read off her hand, which was not successful in subsequent performances. Dreaming of earning a slot on the writing staff of the TV show Late Night With David Letterman, she became a professional standup upon graduating from college with degrees in history and American studies. She struggled for a number of years, working briefly as a bike messenger in Boston. Garofalo is quoted as having disliked life in Houston due to the humidity, heat, and emphasis on prettiness and sports in high school.
Garofalo is a self-described pessimist: "I guess I just prefer to see the dark side of things. The glass is always half empty. And cracked. And I just cut my lip on it. And chipped a tooth."
She has dated comedian Ben Stiller, actor Craig Bierko, and actor Mitch Rouse. She married writer Rob Cohen in Las Vegas in 1992, but the relationship ended soon after.

So basically, she's a rich bitch that will not go away because her daddy is an oil man so her whole I hate Bush thing is bullsh*t. I wonder how much her stock portfolio went up with Exxon.

And her "tea bagging" comments were completely offensive to me. Just because she got all of HER undeserved jobs that way, instead of with talent, since just doesn't have any, it doesn't mean the rest of us do. Her Limpdick brain can't understand wholesome concepts like honesty, and decency.

Actress said she got drunk in Vegas and got married.
Story Highlights 'Husband' Rob Cohen found out when he got engaged to someone else Everyone involved is in show business Needless to say, it was a 'quickie' divorce
1:50PM EST November 13. 2012 - Here's another lesson about the perils of the drunk and disorderly life: Janeane Garofalo claims she got drunk in Vegas, married a guy, and neither of them realized it — for 20 years.
In fact, they only woke up to this inconvenient fact when the guy — Rob Cohen, a producer on the Big Bang Theory — got engaged to marry someone else, Jill Leiderman, a producer on Jimmy Kimmel Live, and his lawyer discovered it.
So they had to get a really quickie divorce, on Saturday in New York, notarized at a midtown bank.
All this is according to Garofalo, who explained it Saturday night at a New York Comedy Festival reunion for The Ben Stiller Show, reported The New York Post today.
No joke, "We were married for 20 years until this evening," she told the audience.
