Iraq police release video 'of Qaeda leader'

BAGHDAD (AFP) — The Iraqi authorities on Monday released a video showing the interrogation of a man they say is Abu Omar al-Baghdadi, chief of the Iraqi branch of Al-Qaeda, whose identity is subject to dispute.

The spokesman for Baghdad's security operations, Major General Qasim Atta, showed images at a media conference of the interrogation of a man who explained how Al-Qaeda financed its activities in Iraq.

"I named myself Abu Omar al-Baghdadi because the name Abu Omar represents the Sunnis and al-Baghdadi is the centre of Iraq and al-Husseini represents all of the people," he said. Baghdadi's last name is al-Husseini.

The alleged Al-Qaeda leader then went on to describe how his insurgent group was financed.

"The financing sources are external and internal. The external sources are from some associations based in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Syria as well as some people who bring money to Iraq.

CAIRO – A daughter of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has taken refuge in the Saudi Embassy in Tehran after eluding guards who have held her and five brothers under house arrest for eight years, a Saudi-owned newspaper reported Wednesday.

It has long been believed that Iran has held in custody a number of bin Laden's children since they fled Afghanistan following the U.S.-led invasion of that country in 2001 — most notably Saad and Hamza bin Laden, who are thought to have held positions in al-Qaida.

This year, U.S. officials said Saad bin Laden may have been killed by a U.S. airstrike in Pakistan, where they said he may have fled after being freed from Iran, but they could not confirm the information.

But Omar bin Laden, another son who lives abroad, told the Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper that Eman told relatives in a call from the embassy that 29-year-old Saad and four other brothers were still being held in Iran.

Attempts by The Associated Press to reach Omar were not immediately returned, and there was no comment from Iranian or Saudi officials.

Asharq Al-Awsat said the 17-year-old daughter, Eman, slipped away from guards and fled to the Saudi Embassy nearly a month ago. The embassy's charge d'affaires, Fouad al-Qassas, confirmed to the paper that she has been at the mission for 25 days and that there were diplomatic efforts with the Iranians to get her out of the country.

Another bin Laden son, Abdullah, who lives in Saudi Arabia, told the Arab TV news network Al-Jazeera in an interview aired this week that Eman telephoned him after she eluded guards who were taking her on a shopping trip in Tehran.

Osama bin Laden reportedly has 19 children by several wives. He took at least one of his wives and their children with him to Afghanistan in the late 1990s after he was thrown out of his previous refuge, Sudan. They fled when the U.S-led war erupted, including the group that tried to escape through Iran.

His son Omar told Asharq Al-Awsat that the family had not known for certain the fate of the siblings that fled through Iran until Eman's escape. "Until four weeks ago, we did not know where they were," said the 28-year-old Omar, who is married to a British woman and has lived in Egypt and the Gulf. He said eight other bin Laden children live in Saudi Arabia and Syria.

Most of the al-Qaida leader's children, like Omar, live as legitimate businessmen. The extended bin Laden family, one of the wealthiest in Saudi Arabia, disowned Osama in 1994 when Saudi Arabia stripped him of his citizenship because of his militant activities. Osama bin Laden's billionaire father Mohammed, who died in 1967, had more than 50 children and founded the Binladen Group, a construction conglomerate that gets many major building contracts in the kingdom.

Omar bin Laden said he spoke by telephone in recent weeks with his 25-year-old brother Othman, who is among the six siblings being held in Iran. Othman told them that Iranian authorities detained the group after they crossed the border from Afghanistan in 2001, and since have been holding them under guard in a housing complex in Tehran, Omar told Asharq Al-Awsat.

Omar said the bin Laden children in Iran were sons Saad, Hamza, Othman and Bakr and daughters Iman and Fatima.

In January, the Treasury slapped financial sanctions on Saad bin Laden and three other al-Qaida figures for suspected terror activities. At the time, Michael McConnell, then-director of national intelligence, said it was believed Saad had left Iran and was likely in Pakistan.

In July, U.S. counterterror officials said Saad may have been killed in a U.S. airstrike in Pakistan, but there has been no confirmation since.

A new audio tape said to contain the voice of Osama Bin Laden has been broadcast on Al Jazeera television in which he squarely blames the U.S. and other large industrialized countries for global warming.
“Al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden has called in a new audiotape for the world to boycott American goods and the U.S. dollar, blaming the United States and other industrialized countries for global warming.” reports the AP.
“This is a message to the whole world about those responsible for climate change and its repercussions – whether intentionally or unintentionally – and about the action we must take,” a transcript on Al-Jazeera’s Web site states.
“Speaking about climate change is not a matter of intellectual luxury – the phenomenon is an actual fact.” Bin Laden is quoted as saying.
“All the industrial states” are to blame for climate change, this version of Bin Laden says, “yet the majority of those states have signed the Kyoto Protocol and agreed to curb the emission of harmful gases.” he adds.
“George Bush junior, preceded by [the US] congress, dismissed the agreement to placate giant corporations. And they are themselves standing behind speculation, monopoly and soaring living costs,” the tape continues.
“They are also behind globalisation and its tragic implications. And whenever the perpetrators are found guilty, the heads of state rush to rescue them using public money.”
Bin Laden added that the rest of the world should “stop consuming American products” and “refrain from using the dollar,”
He also once again referenced liberal academic Noam Chomsky:
“Noam Chomsky was correct when he compared the US policies to those of the Mafia. They are the true terrorists and therefore we should refrain from dealing in the US dollar and should try to get rid of this currency as early as possible.”
He added, “I am certain that such actions will have grave repercussions and huge impact.” saying they would bring “the wheels of the American economy” to a halt.
The authenticity of the recording “could not immediately be confirmed” according to the AP report.

The release of Bin Laden’s warning on global warming yet again demonstrates impeccable timing. Just as the the multi-billion dollar global warming fraud is truly beginning to crumble via multiple scandals and the totally loss of IPCC credibility.
Bin Laden’s comments divert attention away from these factors and will no doubt illicit the stock response – how dare that evil Bin Laden say our government are shafting us! We need to rally behind our government and defeat him, starting with combating the global warming that he’s blaming us for!
What will Bin Laden say next? Perhaps he will wax lyrical about the real and dangerous threat of Swine Flu in the face of international hearings investigating the entire debacle as a hoax.
The purportedly new tape comes less than one week after a previous Bin Laden tape, released to coincide with the president’s state of the union address – a common theme having occurred twice previously in 2006 and 2007.
In that tape Bin Laden took credit for the failed Christmas Day airline bombing attempt, adding that more attacks will be carried out as long as the U.S. continues its support for Israel.
The new audio tape was again released by U.S. monitoring group IntelCenter.
As we have exhaustively documented, Intelcenter is an offshoot of IDEFENSE, which was staffed by a senior military psy-op intelligence officer Jim Melnick, who has worked directly for Donald Rumsfeld. The organization released the “laughing hijackers” tape and claimed it was an Al-Qaeda video, despite the fact that the footage was obtained by a “security agency” at a 2000 Bin Laden speech.
IntelCenter was also caught adding its logo to a tape at the same time as Al-Qaeda’s so-called media arm As-Sahab added its logo, proving the two organizations were one and the same.
The Pakistani based Al-Qaeda group Jundullah, formerly headed by the alleged mastermind of 9/11, an organization which enjoys the funding, support and protection of the CIA, also produces propaganda tapes and literature for As-Sahab and in turn IntelCenter.
We have just about lost count of the amount of times IntelCenter has released a tape from “Al-Qaeda” or “Bin Laden” at the most politically expedient time for the government, whether that be Bush or Obama.

Several previous Bin Laden tapes have been denounced as fake, including a 2002 audio tape which was not authentic according to a Swiss research institute. Experts at the Lausanne-based Dalle Molle Institute for Perceptual Artificial Intelligence compared the tape with 20 earlier recordings of Bin Laden and concluded that the November 2002 tape was fraudulent, in other words that it was someone pretending to be Bin Laden.

In 2007, the last “new” video of Bin Laden, appearing with a dyed beard, was found to have freezes in the sections where the Al Qaeda leader referred to current events.
A leading expert on Bin Laden, Duke University professor Bruce Lawrence, is also adamant that the so called “9/11 Confession” tape, released shortly after the attacks, is an outright fake that has been used by US intelligence agencies to deflect attention from “conspiracy theories” about 9/11.

Every single notorious Bin Laden tape released since 2001 has contained vague non-specific messages and in many cases the footage is old and re-hashed.
While the majority of Americans will glance at the headlines and note that Goldstein has re-surfaced with a vengeance, the truth remains that Bin Laden, according to anyone in the know, is long dead.

However, if by some chance all the experts are wrong and Osama Bin Laden really is still alive, then the CIA owe him a pay rise for his continued sterling efforts to bail out the government, the military industrial complex and now even the global warming alarmists, when their agendas face total breakdown.

A Spanish lawmaker was horrified to find out the FBI used his photograph as part of a digitally enhanced image showing what Osama bin Laden might look like today, he said Saturday, calling into question the crime-fighting agency's credibility in battling terrorism.

Gaspar Llamazares of the United Left party said he would no longer feel safe traveling to the United States after his hair and facial wrinkles were taken from the Internet and appeared on a wanted poster updating the U.S. government's 1998 photo of the al-Qaida leader.

"I was surprised and angered because it's the most shameless use of a real person to make up the image of a terrorist," Llamazares said at a news conference Saturday. "It's almost like out of a comedy if it didn't deal with matters as serious as bin Laden and citizens' security."


The FBI said in a statement Saturday that it was aware of the similarities between their age-progressed image "and that of an existing photograph of a Spanish public official."

"The forensic artist was unable to find suitable features among the reference photographs and obtained those features, in part, from a photograph he found on the Internet," the statement sent to The Associated Press said.

The photo appeared on a U.S. State Department Web site rewardsforjustice.net, where a reward of up to $25 million is offered for bin Laden, wanted in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks and the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Tanzania and Kenya. The FBI said the photo of bin Laden will be removed from the Web site.

Llamazares said he planned to ask the U.S. government for an explanation and reserved the right to take legal action.

The State Department told a reporter to call back Tuesday after the U.S. federal Martin Luther King Day holiday on Monday.

Llamazares said he couldn't believe it when he was first told about the similarity, but he quickly realized the seriousness of the situation.

The 52-year-old politician said he would not feel safe traveling in the U.S. now, because many airports use biometrics technology that compares the physical characteristics of travelers to passport or other photographs.

"I have no similarity, physically or ideologically, to the terrorist bin Laden," he said.

They do share on characteristic — both are 52.

Jose Morales, spokesman for Llamazares' party, told the Associated Press that no one in Spain had any idea that important security computer images such as the retouched bin Laden photo were built up from photographs of real people. Llamazares, the former leader of his party, was elected to Spain's parliament in 2000.

"A technician has cut and paste in Photoshop a photograph he found out there on the Internet, and you don't have to be in Quantico — the agency's Virginia training facility — to do that," Morales told the AP.


Llamazares said it was worrying to see elite security services like the FBI resorting to such sloppy techniques, especially in the light of recent security alerts like the attempted Christmas Day bombing of a Detroit-bound airplane.

"It might provoke mirth, but it demonstrates that what we're seeing from security services isn't exactly recommendable," he said.

Bin Laden is believed to be hiding in the lawless Pakistan frontier bordering Afghanistan. His exact whereabouts have been unknown since late 2001, when he and some bodyguards slipped out of the Tora Bora mountains, evading air strikes, U.S. special forces and Afghan militias.

The U.S. State Department Web site shows the photos and bounty on bin Laden and 41 others wanted for terrorism.

Morales said Llamazares had received calls from Spain's Prime, Foreign and Interior ministers, all expressing their concern and assuring him the government would ask the U.S. for explanations.
