"George Michael 'flying back to England' after spending five weeks in Austrian hospital

George Michael has been released from hospital and is flying back to England today.

The 48-year-old pop star has been receiving treatment for pneumonia at the AKH clinic in Vienna, Austria, for weeks. But after making a recovery from the illness he was discharged from the medical centre at 08.00am and was taken straight to the airport so he can be at home for Christmas.

A hospital staff member told Austrian newspaper Osterreich: 'He’s feeling a lot better. He’s doing so well, he’s able to fly again.'

Yesterday the 'Faith' singer's doctors revealed he was feeling much better and had responded well to treatment.

Christoph Zielinski - one of his doctors - said: "We know he's doing fine and we are generally optimistic."

Last week, the singer's boyfriend Fadi Fawaz tweeted the pop superstar would be flying back to England for Christmas.

He said: 'Christmas at home. I cannot stop smiling today, the best day ever. He is getting better and better. Nothing to worry about, happy days.'

The tweet has since been removed.

George had to cancel all the remaining shows on his 'Symphonica Tour' when he fell ill in November.

In late November, a statement released by Michael's doctors revealed that the singer was 'improving steadily.'

They made clear that he will need a period of 'complete rest' to recover from the illness but emphasised he had no further underlying health problems.

In a statement, Professors Gottfried Locker and Christoph Zielinski said: 'The latest development in Mr Michael's case, which has evolved from a severe pneumococcal infection, necessitated intensive care due to its severity and extension.

'We are happy to announce that Mr Michael is improving steadily with an impressive regression of pneumonic symptoms and follows a steady rate of improvement as hoped.

'There are no other health issues with regards to the patient other than the underlying pneumonic disorder, and no further measures had to be taken.'

They continued: 'Mr Michael is receiving precisely the same treatment as any ordinary patient in Austria would receive at the hospital for this disease.'

The medics said 'complete rest and peace and quiet are mandatory' for his recovery.'

The singer's official website has urged fans to send well wishes to him via his Facebook page.

It also announced the re-release of Michael's festive single December Song (I Dream of Christmas).

A spokesperson for the singer was unavailable for comment when contacted by Mail Online."

George Michael has revealed he had to learn how to walk again after his 'touch and go' battle with pneumonia.

The star, speaking at length about the battle with pneumonia which left his life in the balance, said he still has a five-week gap in his memory from when he was fighting for his life.

Michael, 48, said he had to learn to walk again as his muscles wasted away during his recovery from the illness late last year.

In an interview for Radio 2, he admitted: 'It's like I just dodged a bullet.'

He told presenter Chris Evans that the severity of the illness could have been avoided if he had followed advice to have a health check weeks earlier.

Michael had already been forced to axe a show at the Royal Albert Hall after his temperature and heart rate shot up, but shrugged off advice to get examined, assuming he had got over it.

'I cancelled that show but didn't get myself checked out. I took it for granted that I'd just fought off flu.

'I went and played for another three weeks in Europe. And then one afternoon I was having lunch and suddenly felt really odd and said to everyone that I need to go and lay down for half an hour on my own.

'And that's the last thing I remember for five weeks. It was three weeks of them trying to save my life and two weeks awake.

'I literally had to learn to walk again and weird stuff, because when they keep you sedated for that long your muscles literally atrophy at an incredible rate. And I just woke up like this feeble old man.'

Michael, who was treated in Vienna, had to axe a number of shows as medics brought him back from the brink.

And he said the team around him had deliberately 'downplayed' his illness to avoid a clamour around the hospital.

'If they'd known how bad things were, it would have been a 'death watch' kind of thing,' he said.

'So it wasn't until I came out that we told people, that they had any clue. But for three weeks it was touch and go.'

Michael - who has written new single White Light, about his experiences - said he was 'very close' to death on several occasions.

'I think maybe the reason I find it still a little bit upsetting to talk about is that because it was so random.

'When something like that happens in such a random fashion I think it takes a while to think that life is safe again.'

Michael also confirmed that he is scheduled to perform at the Olympics closing ceremony.

'That's the plan yes, that I'll be playing a couple of songs to kick off the concert at the end,' he told Evans during his Radio 2 breakfast show."

"George Michael says he's seeking help for anxiety

SYDNEY (AP) — George Michael is cancelling Australian shows so he can get treatment for major anxiety he's suffered since a serious health scare last year.

The singer said on his website he had hoped making music and performing would be enough to work through it but that he underestimated how hard his recovery would be.

The 49-year-old former Wham! front man was to perform in Sydney and other Australian cities in November and early December.

He still has concerts scheduled this month in the United Kingdom. They are makeup dates for shows he canceled after being hospitalized for pneumonia in Vienna in November.

Michael spent about three weeks in the hospital and said later that his health had been "touch and go."

He performed at the London Olympics closing ceremony in August."

George Michael has spent two months in an Australian health clinic to tackle the problems which forced him to cancel a concert tour of the country.

The British pop star had pulled out of a national tour of Australia in 2012 citing “major anxiety” and the need for “post traumatic counselling.” Michael’s cancellation came just two weeks before he was due to open the new Perth Arena – a gig which Elton John would slot into.

Now, Britain’s The Sun newspaper is quoting unnamed sources who claim Michael has completed a two-month stint in Australia’s The Sanctuary, and has now returned to London.

The former Wham frontman fell seriously ill with pneumonia in 2011, a condition which forced him to be hospitalized in Vienna, Austria. He later told reporters that his health was "touch and go" – that he’d spent some days on the brink of death.

In the statement issued last September through the Australian promoter of his planned shows, Paul Dainty, Michael said, “By way of explanation all I can say at this time is that since last year's illness I have tried in vain to work my way through the trauma that the doctors who saved my life warned me I would experience.”

He added that his doctors “recommended complete rest and the type of post traumatic counselling which is available in cases like mine but I'm afraid I believed (wrongly) that making music and getting out there to perform for the audiences that bring me such joy would be therapy enough in itself…I was wrong to think I could work my way through the major anxiety that has plagued me since I left Austria last December.”

"George Michael Car Crash: Singer Treated For 'Minor' Injuries

LONDON — George Michael's publicist says the singer is being treated for minor injuries after he was a passenger in a car crash.

A statement released Friday said he was in the accident on Thursday night and suffered "superficial cuts and bruises."

The statement says no other vehicle was involved.

The popular singer has had numerous car-related incidents in recent years.

Sky News reported that the crash happened on the crowded M1 motorway and that a different man involved in the crash had to be taken by air ambulance to a hospital for treatment of a head injury."

British pop superstar George Michael dies aged 53 from suspected heart failure

Pop superstar George Michael's death at the age of 53 from suspected heart failure is being treated by police as "unexplained but not suspicious".

The 53-year-old has died peacefully at home, his family said on Sunday night.

"It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period," Michael's family said in a statement released by Thames Valley Police.
