Two weeks ago Tom Cruise attended the Golde Globe Awards and there was just something "different" about him. He was much more skinny than usual, and I just got that feeling again that something's "off".

Jan. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Hussein Chalayan, a London-based fashion designer, opened the biggest U.K. exhibition of his work at London’s Design Museum yesterday.

Chalayan, who is creative director of the German sporting- goods maker Puma AG, uses mannequins for the show, with each clad in tulle, pleats, flickering LED lights or laser beams. The figures strike a variety of poses in the exhibition. Outside, there is a giant glass tank by the Thames, containing mannequins gathered around olive trees.

“I don’t see fashion as an isolated island, as most people do,” said Chalayan, sporting a closely trimmed beard and dark denim. “I see this as an opportunity to invite other audiences from the world of architecture, art, and design.”

The eclectic approach of Chalayan, who is of Turkish Cypriot origin, was highlighted in his video submission for the 2005 Venice Biennale, where he represented Turkey. U.K. actress Tilda Swinton, wearing a gray biologist’s uniform, dips the T- shirts of three non-British women in solution to get their DNA sequences. The work illustrates suspicion of foreigners in the terrorism age.

Fashion “is about sex and glamour, but it’s also about the way that we live, our memories, the way that we relate to technology, the way that we move,” Deyan Sudjic, Design Museum director, said at the presentation. “Hussein Chalayan is an unusually cerebral designer who does have this resonance.”

The Nazi doctor Josef Mengele is responsible for the astonishing number of twins in a small Brazilian town, an Argentine historian has claimed.

One in five pregnancies in the small Brazilian town have resulted in
twins - most of them blond haired and blue eyed

The steely hearted "Angel of Death", whose mission was to create a master race fit for the Third Reich, was the resident medic at Auschwitz from May 1943 until his flight in the face of the Red Army advance in January 1945.

His task was to carry out experiments to discover by what method of genetic quirk twins were produced – and then to artificially increase the Aryan birthrate for his master, Adolf Hitler.

Now, a historian claims, Mengele's notorious experiments may have borne fruit.

For years scientists have failed to discover why as many as one in five pregnancies in a small Brazilian town have resulted in twins – most of them blond haired and blue eyed.

But residents of Candido Godoi now claim that Mengele made repeated visits there in the early 1960s, posing at first as a vet but then offering medical treatment to the women of the town.
