"Sweden: 23 women convicted of child pornography
STOCKHOLM (AP) — A Swedish court on Tuesday convicted 23 women and one man of child pornography offenses in what investigators called a unique case because of the number of female perpetrators.
The Falu District Court gave the women, aged between 38 and 70, conditional sentences and fines ranging from 2,500 to 18,000 Swedish kronor ($380 to $2,700). It also sentenced a 43-year-old man to one year in prison for aggravated child pornography.
The court said the women received scores of sexually explicit video clips and photographs of children from the man and discussed them online with him. Some said they liked the images or shared sexual fantasies about the children, and one woman sent pornographic images of children to the man, the court said.
The material showed girls and boys of various ages, from toddlers to teenagers.
The man made contact with the women on the Internet and had sexual relations with about half of them, but they had no connection to each other, the court said.
Some 1,181 pictures and 40 films with child pornography were found in the man's computer, including brutal images of shackled children being raped by adults.
Swedish police said reactions they have received from Interpol indicate this is the first child pornography case worldwide to involve so many women.
The court noted that the man appeared to be seeking out women that had been "struck by tragedies within the family, or had been generally mentally worn out."
"Even though they (the women) ... obviously must take full responsibility for their actions, nothing else can be said than that he has abused their weak psychological state and longing for human contact. This has been systematical," the court said.
It added that the majority of the women would probably not have looked at child pornography had they not been introduced to it by the man.
The man confessed to committing a child pornography offense of the lower degree but denied aggravated crime.
A 39-year-old woman denied any involvement, claiming someone else must have used her computer, while five of the women confessed. The others admitted they had received the files, but denied criminal guilt, saying they weren't aware of what kind of files they had received or had suffered memory loss.
In Sweden, defendants in such cases are not named by the nation's media.
Lawyer Staffan Uvabeck, who represents the 39-year-old woman, says he assumes his client wants to appeal.
"She has denied that she used her computer for this," he said. "Since this happened a very long time ago, five years ago, we believe there is room for other interpretations of what has happened."
Lawyers of other defendants didn't immediately return calls seeking a comment."

"Children, teens in custody in Philadelphia dungeon case
PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Eight children and teens linked to the accused Philadelphia basement captors were in protective custody on Wednesday, including a teen so badly abused that "it makes you want to cry," the city's Police Commissioner said.
Four accused captors are charged with kidnapping four mentally handicapped adults, each with the capacity of a 10-year-old child, found in a basement dungeon in what authorities said was a scheme to steal their Social Security disability checks.
The four adults, including one chained to a furnace, were discovered malnourished and imprisoned in the filthy basement room over the weekend. Authorities said two of those held had been captive for roughly 11 years.
Police said they also had eight children and teens in protective custody, the youngest a 2-year-old, and were working to determine the nature of their relationships with both the suspects and captives. Two other young people had briefly been in custody but were released.
One of the teens, Beatrice Weston, 19, is a niece of suspect Linda Ann Weston and had been beaten and tortured, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said. She had been reported missing in 2009.
"It is remarkable that she is alive," Ramsey said, adding that she was covered in burn marks and suffered pellet gun wounds on her ankles.
"It is absolutely one of the worst things you can see," he said. "It makes you want to cry when you see it."
Among the children and teens taken into custody were two who belonged to Jean McIntosh, a 32-year-old woman arrested earlier in the day and charged in the case, police spokeswoman Tanya Little said. She did not know the ages of those children, but said they both appeared to be in good condition.
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said he was not certain the word "horrific" was adequate to describe the situation.
"This is sheer madness," Nutter told a news conference, adding the case was an "incredibly tangled web of horror."
Linda Ann Weston, 51, of North Philadelphia; Gregory Thomas, 47, also of North Philadelphia; and Eddie Wright, 50, described as homeless, have all been arrested in the case, along with McIntosh, who is Weston's daughter.
More than 30 years ago, Weston was convicted of starving a 25-year-old man to death in her apartment in North Philadelphia and served eight years in prison, authorities said.
The suspects in the current case were charged with a lengthy list of crimes, including kidnapping, conspiracy, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment and assault. Authorities were also investigating a stash of Social Security cards and power of attorney documents found in a suspect's apartment.
Police said there may be as many as 50 victims in multiple states in the case that broke after the four captives were discovered by a landlord during a check of the two-story apartment house in the working class Tacony neighborhood."

"Top Chef: Just Desserts' Star arrested for possession of child pornography
Top Chef: Just Desserts" season 1 finalist Morgan Wilson was by no means a fan favorite, but no one could've predicted the true level of his villainy.
AOL TV dug up a story from the Dallas-area Pegasus News outlining child pornography charges levied against the now-former Ritz-Carlton Dallas pastry chef. Apparently, just weeks after Wilson finished second on the Bravo reality show, he was arrested after investigators received file transfers of child pornography from Wilson's computer.
The 38-year-old was booked on Dec. 7, 2010 for sending undercover investigators videos and photos of children and toddlers engaging in sexual acts. In September 2010, he admitted to police that he had viewed three images investigators downloaded from his computer, which were then further examined by the FBI. He was released after his arrest on a $10,000 bond and the promise that he would not have access to a computer without monitoring software.
Wilson was indicted Oct. 6 on three charges of possession with intent to promote child pornography -- a second-degree felony, Pegasus reports. He will appear in front of a judge on Oct. 27.
Although Wilson was listed on the Ritz-Carlton website as an employee Thursday (Oct. 20) morning, his name has been removed. However, his contestant profile is still posted on Bravo's "Top Chef: Just Desserts" season one page.
Viewers might recall that despite Wilson's troublemaking and confidence in his abilities (that some might consider arrogance); he also frequently spoke sweetly of his young son."

Morgan Wilson was indicted on three second-degree felony charges of possession and intent to distribute child pornography.

"Former ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8′ Editor Charged With “Sexual Exploit of a Minor”
William ‘Bill’ Blankinship, the 56-year-old former editor of the reality series Jon & Kate Plus 8, has been charged with 10 counts of sexual exploit of a minor. He was arrested on October 21 after the North Carolina State Bureau Investigation wrapped up their ‘Operation Spyglass’ sting where 24 men were all charged with felonies that included possession and distribution of child pornography and/or sexual acts with a minor.
Bill’s resume included working on other shows that featured children, such as Kate Plus 8, 17 Kids and Counting and Table for 12. The arrest report states:
William is charged with 10 counts of “sex exploit of minor (3rd) 14-1,” which means he possessed material that contained a visual representation of a minor engaging in sexual activity.
He is being held without bond, and a spokesperson for the FBI explains:
“Usually when that happens, they’re under the authority of the U.S. Marshals until they are sentenced and convicted, and then they’d be sent to a Federal prison.”
TLC, the network that hosts the shows that Bill worked on, quickly released a statement saying that the felon was never directly employed by them but came in through a subcontractor of the production company:
“Bill Blankinship was employed by Serious Robots, with whom Figure 8 Films subcontract for editing services. Upon learning of the shocking allegations his employment was terminated. At no time was this man ever in the field or in direct contact with any of the talent for any of our productions.”
Back in 2009, Jon Gosselin voiced his disgust with himself for placing his children on television for the world to see, saying:
“I put my kids out there to every pedophile on the planet and they never got paid for it.”

"CDC Director Arrested for Child Molestation and Bestiality
Dr. Kimberly Quinlan Lindsey, a top official with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been arrested and charged with two counts of child molestation and one count of bestiality.
Dr. Lindsey, who joined the CDC in 1999, is currently the deputy director for the Laboratory Science Policy and Practice Program Office. She's second in command of the program office.
Prior to that role, she was the senior health scientist in the Office of Public Health Preparedness and Response, an office that oversees the allocation process for $1.5 billion in terrorism preparedness.
According to CNN:
"Authorities also charged Lindsey's live-in boyfriend, Thomas Joseph Westerman, 42, with two counts of child molestation.
The two are accused of 'immoral and indecent' sexual acts involving a 6-year-old ...
The bestiality charge says Lindsey 'did unlawfully perform or submit to any sexual act with an animal.'"
Between January and August last year, Dr. Lindsey and her boyfriend allegedly involved the child during sex, and DeKalb County police claim they discovered photographs of Lindsey performing sex acts on a couple of her pets.
Some of you may wonder why I've chosen to discuss this story. Some may think it's in poor taste and doesn't belong in a newsletter about health. However, I believe it's relevant to be aware that someone in charge of your child's health is allegedly engaged in child abuse. Her actions raise serious questions in my mind about her level of concern for the health and well-being of children in general."

Dressed as Father Christmas, with a girl perched on his lap, this is Father Wilfred Baldwin, accused of raping children at a Roman Catholic Church-run home.
It is an image which still haunts the alleged victim who won a High Court battle yesterday.
In the landmark ruling, the Roman Catholic Church faces having to pay millions to sex abuse victims after the court ruled it could be liable for priests' crimes.
‘There are things I have hated for years because of it,’ she said.
‘I can’t stand Christmas because he used to abuse me dressed as Father Christmas.’
The mother of three, an administrator, says she suffered flashbacks and nightmares and has tried to commit suicide.
She claims she was assaulted during two years at The Firs, in Waterlooville, Hampshire, which has now closed, after being sent there with her three siblings.
She said he would sexually assault her as ‘punishment’ for misbehaviour, adding: ‘The nuns knew. He was allowed to take any child and rape them. It was always my fault. He would even make me give money afterwards, tuppence in the poor box. He said God had told him to do it.’
JGE, as she was referred to in court, never spoke of what happened until she was contacted by police investigating abuse allegations at the home.
‘I didn’t tell anyone,’ she said, ‘even one of my siblings who I found out later had also been sexually assaulted.’
In the landmark ruling, Mr Justice MacDuff said the Church can be held responsible for the sins of its clergy because of the ‘immense power’ it gave them.
His judgment could lead to thousands of claims by people in England and Wales who say they were sexually abused by priests, perhaps decades earlier.
It also means the Church may be held to account for other criminal acts by priests.
In the test case yesterday, Mr Justice MacDuff found that the behaviour of Father Baldwin, who died in 2006. was the Church’s responsibility.
The decision means the victim can sue the Bishop of Portsmouth, Crispian Hollis.
The Church told the court it should not be answerable for wrongdoing by Father Baldwin because it did not employ him.
Lawyers for the Portsmouth Roman Catholic Diocesan Trust, led by Lord Faulks QC, said priests were not paid by the diocese, nor could they be disciplined or sacked by the bishop.
They lived on money from the collection plate and a priest could not even be made to change his job without agreeing.
But Mr Justice MacDuff said: ‘Father Baldwin was appointed by and on behalf of the defendants.
‘He was provided with the premises, the pulpit and the clerical robes.
'He was directed into the community with that full authority and was given free rein to act as a representative of the Church.
'He had been trained and ordained for that purpose. He had immense power handed to him by the defendants.
'It was their empowerment of the priest which materially increased the risk of sexual assault, the granting of the power to exploit and misuse the trust which the defendants had granted to him.’
The diocese refused to comment but is expected to appeal.
Anne Lawrence, of the victim support group Minister and Clergy Sexual Abuse Survivors, said she was relieved by the ruling, adding: ‘We hope it opens the way for the settlement of many hundreds of cases pending in courts.’
The Church has been trying for a decade to end scandals over sexual abuse by priests, and is set to publish a report today on abuse at a school in Ealing, West London."

The story going on at Penn St. right now is absolutely surreal. But THIS article takes it all to another level. Some very interesting stuff. Also, it occurs to me that as horrible as the whole thing is, not to mention the firing of Paterno, a living legend weeks away from retiring with dignity, it is good that it has been exposed. It seems that more and more the public is being given opportunities to see the roaches in the wall. Well, regarding the Penn State nightmare, and I live about 45 minutes away, so it's BIG news on every news source...from Pittsburgh to the State Capital, and to all major networks as well as cable news...
Anyhow, this first occurred back in 1998, and the DA of Centre County was Ray Gricar. He mysteriously disappeared in 2005 could not find a body. They found his car and a computer in the river without the hard drive. I googled and found an article that he had issues with Penn State, and from what I can gather, most likely had stuff about this entire thing, but ended up "missing". He was declared legally dead this past summer, so the family could settle the estate.
For some strange reason, I'm thinking that he was trying to get what he needed to get this creep, but the higher ups of Penn St. such as Joepa...as they call this coach...probably kept him from going public with it.
HLN site has the grand jury report available for those who want to read it, but the excerpts they allow on cable is sickening.
We are just getting the proverbial tip of the iceberg on this matter.
But the missing DA really bizarre, because nothing much happens in Centre County....so how does he get someone mad enough to get rid of him???

"Mother of alleged Sandusky victim says son afraid to say 'No'
University Park - The victimized boy of the Penn State coach told his mother "you just can't say no to Jerry Sandusky". The boy is described as "Victim 1" in the grand jury report on the former assistant coach who is now charged with 40 counts of sexual abuse.
The mother who first came forward and told officials at a Clinton, Pennsylvania high school that she suspected inappropriate sexual contact toward her son by Jerry Sandusky, told ABC News "Good Morning America" that her son felt powerless to say no to him.
The mother spoke to GMA, her face hidden and her voice scrambled,
"I had said, 'You know, maybe we should have come to this conclusion earlier - you should have told me. He was like, 'Well, I didn't know what to do. You just can't tell Jerry no.'"
The New York Daily News reports that the grand jury report against Sandusky reveals that the coach systematically abused the boy, having him stay overnight at his home, taking him to professional and college sporting events and showering him with gifts, which included, a computer, gym clothes, dress clothes and cash. The boy was also a participant in Jerry's Second Mile program, an organization for underprivileged children.
The victim's mother told GMA that she slowly became aware that he was being abused, because he would act out violently to intentionally become grounded and avoid seeing Sandusky. But at one point he asked his mother how he could look up information on sex offenders.
"(I) proceeded to ask him if there was something he needed to tell me, if there was something going on. It wasn't 'til a month later when he indicated he was uncomfortable with leaving the school with him, and (Sandusky) pulling him out of classes at school."
The boy testified tin front of the grand jury, saying he would hide in the basement of Sandusky's house to avoid contact with him. He explained the "contact" as being where Sandusky would get
"onto the bed on which Victim 1 was already lying and roll under the boy. With Victim 1 lying on top of him, face to face, Sandusky would run his arms up and down the boy's back and 'crack' it"
The boy testified that eventually, Sandusky began to kiss him on the mouth.
"Victim 1 testified that ultimately Sandusky performed oral sex on him 20 times through 2007 and early 2008. Sandusky also had Victim 1 perform oral sex on him one time and also touched Victim 1's penis with his hands during the 2007-2008 time period. Victim 1 did not want to engage in sexual contact with Sandusky and knew it was wrong. Victim 1 stopped taking Sandusky's phone calls and had his mother tell Sandusky he was not home when Sandusky called."
The mother says,
"I was horrified. I was absolutely horrified. I knew some details but I didn't know that it was that, I didn't know it was that bad. It's caused a lot of nightmares, for him and I both."
The grand jury report also indicates that Sandusky would appear at the boy's school, where the "administration would call Victim 1 out of activity period/study hall in the late afternoon to meet with him in a conference room. No one monitored these visits. Sandusky helped the school with coaching varsity football and had complete access to the school. He also volunteered at the school's football program. One one occasion, the report says, a wrestling coach witnessed Sandusky "lying under Victim 1 with his eyes closed" when the wrestling coach entered the room. Sandusky jumped up and claimed they were just wrestling.
The mother says she expressed her concerns to the school.
"I'm infuriated. Even if they had the slightest inclination that anything inappropriate was going on it should have been reported, or at least brought to my attention. I didn't even know he was leaving the school with my child, taking him out of classes. They never told me that."
The school's assistant principal has told the grand jury that Sandusky was barred from the school district as soon as the mother brought to their attention her concern about the coach's relationship with her son."

"Sandusky had access to vulnerable kids via charity
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — Over the past 30 years, politicians, sports stars and community leaders heaped praise on Jerry Sandusky and the charity he founded for troubled youngsters, The Second Mile. It was a model program, and the acclaimed football coach was its driving force.
Now, prosecutors say that very success enabled Sandusky to find boys and sexually assault them.
Sandusky, 67, was charged last weekend with molesting eight boys over a 15-year period in a scandal that rocked the Penn State campus and brought down the university's beloved football coach, Joe Paterno.
In the aftermath, some are wondering if The Second Mile can survive amid questions about its role in the alleged cover-up.
Sandusky was a star assistant coach at Penn State from the 1970s to the 1990s, and many assumed he would lead the team one day, or even head to pro football. He founded The Second Mile in 1977 for youngsters from broken homes and troubled backgrounds, building it into an organization that helped as many as 100,000 children a year through camps and fundraisers.
Among the big-time athletic figures listed as honorary directors were Cal Ripken Jr., Arnold Palmer, former Pittsburgh Steeler Franco Harris and Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid. President George W. Bush praised the group as a "shining example" of charity work in a 1990 letter. (Sandusky's reaction: "It's about time, George! This is long overdue," he recalled in his autobiography, "Touched.")
But prosecutors said that running the charity gave Sandusky "access to hundreds of boys, many of whom were vulnerable due to their social situations."
He invited youngsters for overnight sleepovers at his home and took them to restaurants and bowl games. He wrestled in the swimming pool with kids who craved the attention. And he gave them gifts: golf clubs, sneakers, dress clothes, a computer and money, according to the indictment from the Pennsylvania attorney general.
The good-guy aura around Sandusky was so great that when some children questioned behavior that didn't seem right, no one took the complaints seriously.
Troy Craig recalled attending a weeklong sleep-away camp run by The Second Mile on the Penn State campus in the early 1990s. He was never sexually abused, but in other ways the coach's behavior seemed inappropriate at the time, said Craig, 33, who is now a disc jockey in State College.
Sandusky "had a way of, whether it was a hug or a hand on the leg in the car as we were driving, or just a way of putting his arm around you," Craig said. "I said this back then to people I knew. Everybody found it hard to believe, or that I was overreacting. I remember feeling as if I was the only one that thought anything was amiss."
Through his attorney, Sandusky has maintained his innocence.
Experts on pedophiles aren't surprised by the stories that have shocked so many people.
Richard J. Gelles, dean of the school of Social Policy & Practice at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and author of several books on abuse and violence in families, said pedophiles typically engage in a "grooming" process in which they select a potential victim and proceed to "break down the inhibitions and establish trust." Gelles said it is no accident so many people saw a "good" Jerry Sandusky.
Sandusky "covered himself by being so beloved that nobody would think he would do something as awful as this," Gelles said.
The mother of one alleged victim told the Centre Daily Times that that disconnect enraged her.
"I just lived with this for so long, and it killed me when people talked about him like he was a god, and I knew he was a monster," said the woman, whose name has not been released.
Thomas Day was 15 when he began a Second Mile fitness program in 1996. Scrawny and not doing that well in school, he was suddenly getting one-on-one encouragement from big college football players who helped run the program. Day met Sandusky only a few times but remembers him as a mythical figure around The Second Mile.
"I remember being kind of envious of kids who got to spend more time around him," said Day, who never witnessed any abuse.
Day said he has trouble sleeping this week because of the scandal.
"These guys took me in and made me in to the man I am today," Day said. He went on to work as a mentor with the program, served with the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq, and is working on his second master's degree at the University of Chicago.
Sandusky also had the support of many other powerful figures in the community. The group's current board includes state Sen. Jake Corman, and attorneys, prominent business leaders, and community volunteers. Corman didn't respond to a message seeking comment.
The grand jury said that Penn State officials in 2002 told Jack Raykovitz, executive director of The Second Mile, that there had been an issue with Sandusky and a minor. But the charity took no action against Sandusky because, it said this week, Penn State did not find any wrongdoing.
And in 1998, Sandusky was investigated after he was accused of "behaving in a sexually inappropriate manner" with a boy in a shower at the football team's facilities, the grand jury said. The report said an attorney for Second Mile who was also university counsel, Wendell Courtney, was aware of the allegations.
Phone calls seeking comment from Courtney on Saturday rang unanswered, and emails sent to him were returned as undeliverable.
The Second Mile said that Sandusky told the organization in 2008 he was being investigated, and that from then on the charity separated him from programs involving youths.
But the word about Sandusky may not have reached other youth programs he was involved with.
Sandusky held summer football camps — both at Penn State satellite campuses and at other Pennsylvania schools — for years after he was banned from taking youths onto the main campus by the school's athletics director and senior vice president. Both officials have now been charged with failing to tell police about a 2002 allegation that Sandusky had sexually assaulted a boy in the showers of the football building.
Sandusky held the football camps through his Sandusky Associates company from 2000 to 2008 at Penn State's Behrend satellite campus near Erie. There were never any complaints, according to a spokesman. Still, Behrend's athletics director said he wishes someone had told him about the 2002 allegation.
"You definitely would know that person doesn't belong here on the campus," Brian Streeter said. "It's a sick feeling even to think about it."
The very success of The Second Mile meant there was plenty of money for Sandusky to lavish on boys. A review of tax forms filed by The Second Mile shows that out of almost $3.3 million in revenue during the 2008-09 year, salaries, wages, and payments to directors totaled almost $1.4 million, along with $190,000 for "camp food" and $288,000 for "other expenses."
Sandusky is no longer on the payroll; his last payment was $57,000 in 2007-08, according to tax records. Over the years the payments to Sandusky totaled hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Records from The Second Mile show that the organization asks staff members and volunteers to sign a statement affirming they have never been suspected of child abuse. They must also submit a criminal background check. Officials from the Second Mile didn't respond to a question about whether any such checks were ever done on Sandusky.
The Second Mile said in a statement that it has done "everything in our power to cooperate with law-enforcement officials." But Pennsylvania Attorney General Linda Kelly said that during the grand jury investigation there was an "uncooperative atmosphere" from some officials at Penn State and The Second Mile. And Gov. Tom Corbett said he believes there will be an investigation into what Second Mile officials knew.
Deborah Small, an associate professor of marketing and psychology at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, said she doesn't think The Second Mile will survive the scandal.
"There's too much moral hypocrisy going on," she said. "No one's going to want to be associated with them."
Late last week, The Second Mile removed the list of honorary directors from its website."
