Just a quick note re Billy Joel - possibly replaced, hence the long time since he's done a new album featuring the talents he used to have. In about 1994 I lived in Princeton and McCarter Theater, the local regional theater, sometimes had impromptu performances or lectures in addition to their regular four theater shows a year schedule. One day I was walking down the street by the local record store and saw this black and white, full size poster of "Billy Joel" which said he was going to do an acoustic performance (without prior announcement in the theater's marketing materials for the season.) And he was just going to perform one night, I forget whether it was that same night or the next night.
The expression in his eyes and the energy in that photo TOTALLY gave me the all over body creeps and all that came to my mind was "He's been possessed by gray aliens or something." I used to be a big Billy Joel fan, but the aura and energy of this photograph of him creeped me out.
Didn't think anything more of it until reading this Alexa Joel thread. Makes me wonder if that initial impression I had of replacement/possession was accurate or not. Don't have time to research this right this moment but what do you guys and gals think? It WOULD explain the lack of recent work. He released a weird album of original piano solos some years ago and I remember hearing him talk about it on NPR, they were all composed in classical style, just featuring the piano. I don't think the original Billy had a classical background - but maybe I'm wrong? It sure seemed as out of left field as Sting/Fing releasing that messed up album a few years ago featuring him playing the - what was it - zither or mandolin or something. Not something the original artists were likely to do in my opinion!
