This is my first suggestion of a celebrity double, so please tell me if this candidate for substitution has already been evoked and if there is a conclusion or consensus regarding the likeliness of his being swapped quite a few years back.
I remember him being my favorite comedian. Then, one day, he sounded like an entirely different person. It wasn't just that he wasn't funny anymore. It was more disturbing than that. He used to act wacky, doing crazy things all the time. He clowned around and didn't take himself seriously. He was funny but didn't seem like it was taking its toll. Just a fun guy.
Then he reappeared after a supposed injury. The story was that he was sniffing coke and that the cloud of powder caught fire and burned his head, almost killing him. This was used as an excuse for his having had his sense of humor burned out of him. The confrontation with pain and death was said to have been too much for him, showing him that life is too serious to poke fun at.
That story never stuck, and it was so preposterous that I couldn't believe it. So I never really understood why such a bright and lively comic would abruptly become a stick in the mud with little apparent interest in much of anything and clearly no perspective of the underlying humor in our strange human condition. Can we unlearn so much of life's lessons in a single incident? Or did something else occur? Thanks for sharing your knowledge or observations about the possibility of his not being the original one.
